What is an MCP gateway?

An MCP gateway is a single control point between every agent in an organization and every MCP server those agents reach. It decides which agent gets which server, holds credentials centrally instead of in each agent's own config, and records every tool call that happens. The servers stay where they are. What changes is that access runs through one door.

Why it shows up past a handful of servers

MCP connects one client to one server. A host creates a separate client, with its own dedicated connection, for each server it uses. Three servers and one team is fine. Speakeasy puts four agents and twelve servers at 48 separate authentication flows to build, secure and revoke, which nobody staffs.

The harder problem is visibility, not access. Gateway vendors report that buyers cannot name which AI apps and MCP servers their people are already connected to, so there is nothing concrete to write a policy against. Routing through a gateway makes that inventory exist as a side effect. Cost follows: Composio reports gateway-level caching cutting LLM spend by up to 90% on repeated calls.

For the team rolling it out

Adoption splits by role. Engineers wire up servers themselves and barely notice the friction; designers, PMs and ops people stall on connection setup. One gateway endpoint with one set of instructions is what makes the second group self-sufficient.

When it is worth it

Under roughly five servers with a single owner, a gateway is overhead you will regret. Past a dozen servers, or the moment a second team plugs in its own, credential sprawl and the audit gap arrive together and the gateway becomes the cheaper of the two options.
