What is intelligent automation? (And what you are actually buying)

Intelligent automation is a category name, not a technology. Deloitte, EY, and the automation vendors use it for a bundle sold together: RPA for the clicking, AI for reading documents, process management for the routing. Nothing in the bundle is new. The label exists so the pieces can be sold, and budgeted, as one program.

Three sellers, one phrase

Deloitte defines intelligent automation as AI technologies paired with an automation technology, where that second half can be RPA, business process management, intelligent document processing, or OCR. EY sells it as a consulting service and calls it the integration of robotics with components from other emerging technologies. Gartner sells much the same bundle under its own name, hyperautomation, which it listed as a top trend for 2020. a16z then reused the phrase for agent-native tooling in a piece titled "RIP to RPA: The Rise of Intelligent Automation." One term, no shared boundary.

What the bundle usually contains

Deloitte's 2022 survey of automation leaders is the useful check on the marketing. RPA was already implemented at 74% of respondents and OCR at 50%, while AI was still at 46% planning to adopt. A program branded intelligent automation is therefore, most of the time, an RPA and document-capture program with the AI part still on the roadmap. Respondents expected 31% cost reduction over three years, and average payback stretched to 22 months from 16 two years earlier.

For teams coming from Zapier, n8n, or Make

Nobody building in those tools calls their work intelligent automation. The phrase belongs to enterprise procurement, and it usually implies a systems integrator, a multi-year contract, and per-bot licensing.

How to read the term

Treat it as a purchase order heading, not a capability. When a proposal arrives under that label, ask for the line items priced separately: RPA licences, document capture, process orchestration, and the AI work, each with its own payback. If the AI line is under a fifth of the spend, judge the program as an RPA program, because that is what it is.
