What is sales force automation (SFA)?

Sales force automation, or SFA, is the oldest layer of CRM: the system of record for accounts, contacts, opportunities, activities and forecasts. It grew out of the early 1990s, became the core of Siebel and later of Salesforce, and still ships as the base module of every major CRM. It tracks the selling. It does not do the selling.

What is sales force automation?

Sales force automation automates the recording of a sale, not the making of one. The category dates to the early 1990s, when around 400 vendors were selling into it and Siebel Systems launched in 1993. Siebel Sales Enterprise shipped in 1995, and by 2002 Siebel held roughly 45% of the CRM market. Oracle bought the company for about $5.85 billion in a deal that closed in March 2006. Salesforce delivered the same modules through a browser instead of a client install. The modules themselves barely changed.

What sits inside an SFA system

Gartner's core capability list has been stable for two decades: account, contact, activity, opportunity, pipeline and forecast management, with quoting, proposals, partner management and analytics added later as mandatory. Every one of those is a record a human creates and keeps current. That is what executives miss when they read "automation" in the name. The automation is clerical, and the clerk is the rep. Salesforce's 2025 State of Sales research puts actual selling at 28% of a rep's week.

Whether the term still matters

Gartner ran its Sales Force Automation Platforms Magic Quadrant for the last time in 2025. The 2026 edition scores the same 13 vendors under a new name, CRM Sales Platforms, weighted toward embedded AI. The label is retiring while the module underneath stays exactly where it was. So treat the two problems separately. If the forecast is unreliable, that is an SFA problem and the fix belongs inside the CRM. If the team spends its week feeding the CRM, SFA is what generates that work, and the fix has to sit above it.
