What is an AI employee? (And what to ask before buying one)

AI employee is how vendors price agents, not how agents are built. Artisan sells Ava on an Employee plan at $600 a month; 11x sells Alice as a digital worker from $36,000 a year. The label sets a headcount comparison in the buyer's head. The number that decides the deal is what happens when the agent is wrong.

What is an AI employee?

"AI employee" describes a price tag, not an architecture. Under the label sits what other vendors sell as an AI agent: a model, a set of tools, a defined scope of work. The packaging is what changes. Artisan markets Ava as "the first AI employee" and names its entry tier the Employee plan at $600 per month. 11x calls Alice a digital worker behind a "Hire Alice" button, with its Growth tier listed at $36,000 per year and third-party breakdowns putting year one closer to $50,000 to $60,000 once onboarding is counted. Ema raised $75 million building what it calls the Universal AI Employee.

Why the label works on a budget line

Naming a role moves the spend next to a salary instead of next to a software line item. A $36,000 agent reads as expensive against a seat license and cheap against a fully loaded sales rep. That comparison is the point of the category, and it does more work in the sales cycle than any capability claim.

The question that separates the vendors

Buy on failure behavior. A person who cannot finish a task notices, stops, and escalates to someone with authority. Software stops, or keeps producing confident output that nobody checks. Ask three things before signing: where the agent escalates and to whom, what the audit trail records for each action taken, and what the contract owes the buyer when the output is wrong. Employee framing rarely comes with employee-grade accountability, and the liability sits with the buyer. If a vendor has no answer on escalation, price the deal as software and negotiate on that basis.
