What agent spend buys
An agent takes a goal, chooses its own sequence of steps, calls systems, and repeats until it finishes or escalates. Spend then tracks tasks completed. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027, blaming cost, unclear value and thin risk controls rather than model quality.
How to choose
Ask any vendor what the product does when nobody is watching. If it stops and waits for a human before every action, it is a copilot whatever the deck says. Buy seats when the constraint is how fast people work. Fund agents when the constraint is a backlog nobody has time to touch, and start where a wrong result is cheap to reverse: lead enrichment, ticket routing, report assembly.
