What "enterprise" adds to an agent

Enterprise AI agents run on the same models as a consumer assistant. The difference is the layer around the model: which systems of record the agent can write to, whose credential it borrows, what gets logged on every action, and how a wrong action gets reversed. That layer is a governance decision before it is an engineering one, which is why the label is easy to sell. In June 2025 Gartner counted about 130 vendors with real agentic features out of the thousands making the claim.

Why pilots stall between demo and rollout

Gartner expects more than 40% of agentic AI projects to be canceled by the end of 2027, and the reasons it names are cost, unclear business value, and thin risk controls, not weak models. The pilot ran against a clean test account. The rollout runs against Salesforce, an ERP, DocuSign and SharePoint, each with its own permission scope, its own owner and its own approval queue. Getting five system owners to agree usually takes longer than building the agent did.

Where to spend and where to wait

Okta's March 2026 survey of 292 executives found 92% report agents in moderate or widespread use, while only 34% of organizations apply the same access controls to agents that they apply to employees, and 58% reported an AI security incident or close call inside twelve months. Fund agents on high-volume work where output is checkable the same day and an error is cheap to reverse: ticket triage, lead routing, document extraction. Hold anything touching payments or signed contracts until the audit trail, escalation path and rollback exist. Agent coverage without those three is a liability the board eventually prices.
