What is a digital worker? (And where the term came from)
Digital worker is RPA vocabulary. Blue Prism popularized it in 2018 to sell server-run bots as roles rather than as scripts, and priced them per unit. Agent vendors have recycled the word for large language model systems, so the label now tells a buyer about packaging and capacity, not capability.
Where the term came from
Blue Prism put "digital worker" into enterprise vocabulary. Its 29 August 2018 release of v6.3 marketed "the world's most successful Digital Workforce" and promised six intelligent automation skills: knowledge and insight, planning and sequencing, visual perception, problem solving, collaboration, and learning. The word did commercial work. It separated centrally governed, server-run bots from desktop macro recorders, and it moved procurement off task counts and onto roles. Automation Anywhere followed with pre-built digital personas sold as virtual employees. IBM defined a digital worker as software-based labor that runs meaningful parts of complex end-to-end processes.
What one digital worker actually bought
A unit of licensed capacity. RPA platforms sell per concurrent digital worker on a quote basis, with third-party estimates landing between $13,000 and $20,000 per year each, before servers and developer certification. One unit is one isolated runtime executing the processes it was trained on. Change a screen it depends on and it stops. Role language never changed the maintenance model underneath it.
Reading the word in 2026
Agent vendors reuse the label, and "digital worker" and "AI employee" now appear on the same product pages. Salesforce sells Agentforce as its digital labor platform, promising a "limitless workforce". The distinction still worth holding is lineage: an RPA digital worker follows a process a human mapped in advance, while a model-driven one picks its next step at run time. Ask which one a vendor is selling and what a single unit costs per year. If the answer is a fixed trained process, budget it as automation maintenance rather than as headcount.
