What you actually set up
A no-code AI agent builder gives you three boxes to fill in. A trigger: an email landing in a shared inbox, a form being submitted, a new row appearing in a spreadsheet. A job description, written in plain English the way you would brief a new hire. And a list of accounts the agent is allowed to touch, ticked from a menu. Zapier lists more than 9,000 of them.
The part that breaks
The first version works in a demo. Run 40 is where things go sideways, and most builders show you very little about why. One commenter on Hacker News described a grown-up setup as "complex spaghetti you're afraid to touch in the UI". Two settings decide whether you can recover from that. Run history: a readable record of what the agent saw and what it did, every single run. And approval points: the places where it stops and waits for a person before it sends, pays, or deletes anything.
What it costs, and when it is worth it
Billing is per task run, not per seat. Zapier's free tier covers 100 tasks plus 400 agent activities a month, and n8n Starter is 20 euros a month for 2,500 runs. An agent that retries itself burns through that faster than a fixed workflow does, so watch the meter for the first month. Buy one when the job repeats weekly or more, starts from a clear trigger, and has an obvious point where a person signs off. If it runs twice a month, keep doing it by hand. Whatever you pick, check you can export the setup: Flowise, one of the better known visual agent builders, announced its wind-down on 29 July 2026 and ends support on 31 August.
