Agentic AI vs AI agents: what's the difference? (And why vendors disagree)
AI agent names a product you can buy. Agentic names a claim about how far that product gets on its own. Vendors do not use the pair consistently, so one company's AI agent is another company's workflow. Gartner puts the cost of that confusion at over 40% of agentic projects canceled by 2027.
Buying decisions get made on these two labels, and the labels do not hold. Google's machine learning glossary treats agentic as nothing more than the adjective form of agent, a quality such as autonomy that an agent possesses. Vendors treat it as a product tier.

Where the definitions collide
Freshworks calls AI agents programs that follow predefined instructions and wait for a trigger, and lists Siri, Alexa and smart thermostats as examples. Anthropic splits the same territory the other way: a workflow runs predefined paths, an agent directs its own process. Under those definitions, the Freshworks AI agent is the Anthropic workflow.
What the confusion costs
Gartner surveyed more than 3,400 organizations and predicts over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, citing cost, unclear value and weak risk controls. It named the mechanism too: agent washing, rebranding chatbots and RPA as agentic. Of the thousands of vendors making the claim, Gartner counts roughly 130 with real agentic capability.
Ask about behavior, not the label
Neither word is worth writing into a requirement. Ask what the system finishes end to end with nobody watching, what it is allowed to touch (an inbox, a spreadsheet, a refund, a payment), and where it stops for a person. The word on the datasheet does not.
