What is the best AI agent platform? (And how to compare cost)
There is no single best AI agent platform, because the three categories on most shortlists meter usage differently. Developer frameworks bill per seat. Cloud suites bill per credit or per compute hour. Business team platforms bill per completed run. The meter, not the feature list, is what decides the budget.
The winner is decided by who gets paged when the agent is wrong, and by which meter the vendor bills.

When a cloud suite wins
Buy the suite when agents live inside a Microsoft or AWS estate that central IT already owns. Forecasting is the exposure. Copilot Studio bills 1 credit for a scripted answer, 5 for an agent action and 10 for tenant graph grounding, so the invoice tracks how hard agents think rather than how many people use them. Cross 125% of prepaid capacity and Microsoft disables the agents: end users get "This agent is currently unavailable." A budget miss becomes downtime. When a business team platform wins
Buy one of these when the team that owns the outcome also operates the agent. The meter is a finished run, not a thought. n8n charges EUR 20 a month for 2,500 executions and counts a 3-step and a 30-step workflow identically, so an ops lead can forecast the bill from ticket volume. The tradeoff is depth: repeating work is handled well, novel reasoning less so.
How to choose
Run one real workload through two finalists for 30 days and compare invoices, not feature grids. When GitHub repriced Copilot to token billing in June 2026, developers reported monthly costs jumping from $29 to roughly $750. Buy the framework if engineers own the outcome, the suite if central IT does, and the business team platform if the operators do.
