When management is the constraint
Camunda's 2026 survey of 1,150 senior IT and business decision makers found half of them expect uncontrolled agentic AI to amplify poorly implemented processes. Only 11% of agentic AI use cases reached production in the past year, and 48% of deployments sit in isolated silos instead of running end to end. Those are ownership results, not tooling results. If nobody can name who owns an approval or what its cycle time is, more software just adds speed to a process the organization cannot describe.
When automation is the constraint
The process is documented, one person owns its number, and the delay is staff retyping records between systems. Invoice approval, lead routing and new-hire provisioning are the usual first three. IBM research cited by BMC puts savings from process automation at 20% to 50% of process cost, and that case survives a budget review because the baseline already exists.
How to choose
Ask two questions before signing anything: who owns this process, and what is its cycle time today. Two answers means buy the automation. No answer means the next quarter of spend is management work and the software waits. Gartner retired the BPM Magic Quadrant in favor of a Market Guide for Business Process Automation Tools, so vendors sell only the executing half. The owning half stays in-house, and so does the blame when it is missing.
