Business process automation vs RPA: which one to fund?
Both automate work, but they buy different things. RPA buys speed: a bot logs into the screens staff already use and repeats the clicks. BPA buys a new process, where the steps get redesigned and systems hand work to each other directly. The first shows results in weeks and bills for maintenance forever.

When RPA earns the money
RPA exists because some vendors will never open their systems. Engineers describe the work as driving old applications that cannot be given programmatic access, and for a system nobody will replace this decade, a bot beats a migration project. Price the maintenance, not the licence. UiPath lists Automation Cloud from $25 a month for personal automations, routes every enterprise tier to a sales call, and sells self-healing interface automation only in its top tier. A vendor charging extra to stop bots breaking is telling you how often they break.
When to redesign the process instead
A bot pointed at a broken process runs the broken version faster and hides it behind a green dashboard. Deloitte has found process fragmentation to be the number one barrier to automation across four consecutive surveys, with 74 percent of respondents already running RPA and 41 percent still lacking an enterprise automation strategy. Teams migrating off Zapier, n8n or Make hit the same wall: the connector was never the constraint, the handoffs between four owners were.
How to choose
Ask what happens to the bot if that system ships a real integration next quarter. If the bot becomes pointless, the process is the asset, so fund the redesign. Use RPA as a bridge on systems outside your control, with a retirement date in the business case, and expect the bot budget to grow every year it survives.
