Microsoft's Finance Agent in Excel is a fair picture of what ships today. It sorts two data sets into perfectly matched, potentially matched, and unmatched transactions, proposes the matching rules itself, and lets an accountant accept, regenerate, or remove each suggestion before anything moves. It runs assistive or autonomous. Nothing posts to the ledger on its own.
Why adoption runs ahead of returns
Gartner's 2025 survey of 183 finance leaders found 59% using AI, up from 37% in 2023, with 91% calling the impact low or moderate. RGP surveyed 200 US CFOs in December 2025: 66% expect significant returns within two years, 14% report meaningful value today.
The gap is structural. Clean matches were never what made the close slow. The cost sits in the residue: one payment covering five invoices, partial payments, refunds, intercompany timing. An agent that clears the tidy rows and drops the rest into a queue has moved the work, not removed it. Only 10% of CFOs say they fully trust their own enterprise data, and 86% say legacy systems limit what AI can do for them.
What to judge a vendor on
Ask about the exception queue, not the match rate. For each item the agent could not settle, what did it leave behind: the inputs it read, the rule it applied, the reason it stopped? That record decides whether a reviewer spends 2 minutes or 20 on the exception, and it is the same record an auditor asks for later. If the close drags because staff research exceptions, an agent pays for itself. If it drags because five systems disagree on the same number, fix that first.
